Privacy Policy

HandyQuran (handyquran.com) is a free service with no ads and no tracking. This page explains what information we collect, why, and how you can control it.

What we collect

Account details (optional): if you sign in, we store your email address, or the account identifier provided by Google or Apple sign-in, plus the date your account was created.
Personal dua lists and memorization progress (optional): saved only if you are signed in and choose to use these features.
Prayer time location: either the name of a city you choose, or GPS coordinates rounded to roughly 1 km, so we never know your precise address.
Push notification subscriptions (optional): a browser-generated push endpoint and the prayer times needed to schedule alerts.
Achievement sharing cards (optional): generated on request; we do not store a log of who you shared them with.
Basic security logs: server request logs (IP address, timestamp, page requested) kept briefly to protect the service from abuse.

What we do not collect

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, third-party analytics trackers, social media pixels, or device fingerprinting. We never request or store your exact GPS location, your name, or a phone number.

Why (and our legal basis)

Calculating accurate prayer times for your area — your consent, given when you share a city or location.
Sending push notifications at prayer time — your consent, given when you enable notifications.
Running your account, dua lists, and memorization tracker — performance of a contract with you (our terms of use).
Keeping the service secure and preventing abuse — our legitimate interest, kept to a minimum and short retention.

Where it is stored

All data is stored in a PostgreSQL database on servers we operate, hosted by OVH in the EU/France region. We do not transfer your data outside the European Economic Area.

Push notifications and location

We never see or store a precise GPS location. If you allow location access, your device rounds it to approximately 1 km before it reaches us, or you can simply type your city instead. We store this rounded location (or city name) together with the daily prayer times calculated from it, and the push subscription endpoint your browser gives us so we can deliver notifications at the right time. You can disable notifications or delete your location at any time in settings.

Accounts

Creating an account is optional and only needed for personal dua lists, the memorization tracker, and syncing across devices. You can sign in with a magic link sent to your email, or with Google or Apple sign-in. We only receive the minimum identifiers these providers share (typically your email address).

Cookies

We use only:

A strictly necessary session cookie — set only when you are signed in, to keep you logged in. This does not require consent under EU law because it is essential to the service.
A locale preference cookie — remembers your chosen language (e.g. English or Arabic).

We do not set any advertising, tracking, or analytics cookies. If we later add self-hosted analytics, it will be cookie-free and will not identify individual visitors.

Your rights

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR, you have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Export your data in a portable format
Correct inaccurate data
Delete your account and associated data
Withdraw consent for push notifications or location at any time
Object to processing based on legitimate interest
Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

You can access, export, or delete your data from your account settings, or by emailing us at the address below.

Retention

If you delete your account, we remove your account data, dua lists, memorization progress, and location within 30 days. Push subscriptions that receive no activity for 90 days are automatically deleted. Security logs are kept only briefly and then discarded.

Children

At launch, HandyQuran is intended for users aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. Dedicated children's features, with appropriate safeguards, are planned for a future release.

Changes

We may update this policy as the service evolves. We will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, note them on the site.
